In the case of Socrates, this was said to be his beloved student, Alcibiades and in that of Antisthenes, an unnamed lad whom he had befriended.

The role of eros in his educational method is an important theme in the writings of his pupils: Plato, Xenophon, Aeschines and Antisthenes. In style and language, the papyrus as a whole shows a few unique forms. Its reference to the ancients in general could be a sign that the author follows an anecdotal or even doxographical convention known to him through writers of the Hellenistic or even Greco-Roman era. The uncertainty of Socrates' philosophical success also surfaces in the dialogues of Plato, particularly in the form of an epistemological dilemma.
